Guidepost Solutions was the consultant of record on a districtwide safety and security upgrade project for the Matanuska-Sustina Borough School District in Palmer, Alaska. These improvements provided safer and more secure schools throughout the district which serves approximately 16,000 students in grades K-12 throughout 40 buildings spanning a geographical area that is as vast as the state of West Virginia.
Our team coordinated with the district, the fire code official, and the City of Wasilla and Palmer to submit all project deliverables including the security assessment, standards development, production of drawings and specifications, and project budgets. At the onset of the engagement, we conducted personnel interviews; reviewed current project documentation; and developed a written program narrative document summarizing findings, options, recommendations, and costs for each group of systems. We identified technology hardware and software that addressed the proposed system requirements and prepared specifications that detailed material, equipment and installation requirements for the systems. The team oversaw the project until full installation, selecting and negotiating the contractor to implement the system, as well as monitoring the contractor to properly construct and commission the systems in conformance with the construction documents. The final design integrated local controls and monitoring of “lock-down” buttons, video surveillance, intrusion detection, and duress alarms across the district’s school facilities for the protection of students, faculty, and staff. We were able to perform the security assessment and produce construction drawings within the first 90 days of the project.
