Over the past ten years, many educational institutions have expanded their international student programs. During this time, U.S. Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Department of State reviews of these institutions have grown tremendously as have the tracking and reporting requirements placed upon educational institutions. Staying current with the many Student and Visitor Information System (SEVIS) requirements can be daunting and serious errors can jeopardize a school’s ability to enroll international students.
Guidepost Solutions recently completed a detailed F-visa review for a university. The university was having difficulty obtaining approval for an I-17 update (petition for approval of a school to enroll non-immigrant students) and received an investigative visit from federal regulators.
We conducted a detailed review of the university’s international student program which accounts for a high percentage of its overall student population. The review consisted of a best practices and regulatory assessment of its enrollment, grading, maintenance of status, and employment authorization programs (CPT/OPT) and resulted in numerous recommendations for enhancement to these programs.
